With the recent (and dare I say best?) Mission Impossible out in Cinemas, I decided to go back and watch the first three in the franchise that defined and re-booted action movies in the 1990’s and early 2000’s and creating one of the most loved film series of over a decade.

*spoilers ahead*

Mission Impossible. The original. Well, not the original obviously, but the first time we see a baby-faced Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt.

Notes I Made Whilst Watching:

-“Can we get a cappuccino machine in here?” Ethan Hunt is sassy and I love it.

-John Voight is the much-loved boss so I assume he will be killed at some point.

-The whole team is very pally and scrappy and flirty.

-Character is introduced clearly wearing a mask- the prosthetics are way too distracting unlike the movies now. These are terrible, like Austen Powers rejects.

-Silly music, sass squad, everything’s less slick and therefore less tense?

-Nope, forget it, everyone’s dying and it’s super traumatic. I was TRICKED.

-Tom Cruise acts distressed very well.

-“We decoded a message on the internet.”

-I hope there’s a 90’s Spy computer font out there somewhere because it’s tacky and great.

-“Wake up Claire, Jim’s dead!”

-Living for the older woman sexualising the young Cruise, that needs to happen more often tbh.

-It’s Luther!

-So many now over-used clichés from this one heist scene. It’s the Godfather of espionage break-ins.

-The iconic scene is iconic for a reason, the silence is breath-taking.

-Ethan’s circular, wire-rimmed glasses are a surprising delight that are never depicted in the parodies.

-All this time I had no idea it was Leon literally holding the cable by his bare hands. The little ratty almost ruining the super high-tech plan is also deliciously silly.

-It might be a mini-disk but it’s still an impressive size to do slight of hand with.

-A library stamp as a clue= vintage.

-Luther is a Good Guy.

-“Access denied.” “Did you check the batteries?” “I always check the batteries.”

-Excellent, super sneaky reveal.

-Voight is good at being a DICK.

-The wire-rimmed glasses are really the star of the show here.

-Unrealistically precise chopper blade to the neck.

-The bromance between Hunt and Luther is the true meaning behind all of Mission Impossible.

Who Should Watch It?

Lovers of origin stories, intense sweat-watching scenes, double double crossing and explosive chewing gum.

Enjoyment Rating: 7/10
