This year is set to be another bonanza of superheros, Disney remakes, movie sequels no one asked for and actors clearly tired of doing the same old shit...

Let's see what I make of it all! (Side note: I have definitely not included all releases)

(Extra side note: there may be spoilers depending on if I'm psychic or not but that's something completely out of my control)

Movie: Glass

Due: 18th January

Prediction: The much awaited sequel of (pretty good actually) Unbreakable but for some reason with Split thrown in there too. Presumably Shyamalan always intended this? And wasn't forced last minute, cramming something that recently did quite well at the box office to keep the studios happy? We'll never know. ANYWAY. I don't think it will match up to the first at all. My guess is the emphasis will be on action and not *cool superhero genre subversion* like Unbreakable.

General Consensus: People will be pissed off that Samuel L. Jackson's character isn't quite as badass as was promised

Movie: Lego Movie 2

Due: 8th February

Prediction: The scrambling of a plot that remains interesting will be what keeps this from hitting the mark. As with the other Lego-based movies, it's the freshness of ideas that keeps them so entertaining and I doubt they'll be able to pull a Toy Story 2 with this i.e. make an instant sequel classic (more on Toy Story later)

General Consensus: "The first one was so good with it's reveal ending, why couldn't we have had that again?!"

Movie: Captain Marvel

Due: 8th March

Prediction: Swiftly jogging in after Wonder Woman's success (bet Marvel were pissed they didn't get to reveal that women could front a movie first) I can't see why this won't do well. I hope to God Almighty that they inject some humour into Brie Larson's character and don't lean too hard into the trope of 'Strong female = no nonsense, no fun'

General Consensus: Critics and fans will like it apart from those who will whine that she won't make a good Avengers leader because *insert cover for misogyny here*

Movie: Dumbo

Due: 29th March

Prediction: 'A dark and twisted re-imagining of your favourite circus elephant' despite the fact that Dumbo was already HELLA dark. Also, why do we keep calling films exactly the same thing? This will be so confusing in years to come.

General Consensus: People will read way more into Tim Burton's work than they should, probably saying something like 'a return to form'

Movie: Hellboy

Due: 12th April

Prediction: What I said previously about having the same name can also be applied here with an added SERIOUSLY. This is in the same goddam series and we're going to call it the same thing as two films ago are we? That's what we're doing? And no one's going to get confused?

General Consensus: People will spend so long having to work out differentiating terms between this and the first that the film itself will never get talked about.

Movie: Aladdin

Due: 24th May

Prediction: It will neither be as magical as the first nor gritty and hard-hitting enough to confront real issues. E.g. the concept of 'poverty' will be brought up but confidently brushed under the carpet (pun intended) once Aladdin marries Jasmine because fa la la happy ending.

General Consensus: Fans will love it, non-fans will ask why it needed to get made.

Movie: Men In Black: International

Due: 14th June

Prediction: The most likely here to be straight-up excellent viewing. The Men In Black franchise have proven themselves capable of making their sequels highly entertaining and we've seen good work from Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth sassing it up in Thor: Ragnarok so I genuinely expect great things. At the very least, a good flick for Friday nights with beer.

General Consensus: There will be that one friend who says it isn't the same without Will Smith and will then go on to incessantly regurgitate Will Smith quotes at you.

Movie: Toy Story 4

Due: 21st June

Prediction: Okay, so what happened was, the creators of Toy Story came up with this really sweet, relatively smart way of rounding off the franchise that stayed true to the narrative arc and left room for us to imagine a positive future for all the toys. But then what happened is that that movie did REALLY BLOODY WELL because sad saps like me who were kids for the first two are now grown adults and are a lucrative market so essentially, my hypothesis goes: this movie cannot and will not be as good as the first three. But what is a movie franchise without a final one that stinks so bad the makers finally leave it alone?

General Consensus: Man, that stunk.

Movie: The Lion King

Due: 19th July

Prediction: One of my favourite childhood movies and yes, it will be an almost exact replica of the cartoon and yes, the hyper-realistic animation won't blend well with the musical numbers and yes, you might as well watch the original but I will absolutely get goosebumps at some point if not for all of it.

General Consensus: Fans will love it, non-fans will ask why it needed to get made. Jules will cry.
