The Creepy Object Idea

I’ve recently written some lighter, comedy-focused scripts and I think I’d like my next one to be slightly darker. I remember writing creepy short stories when I was younger and there’s something very satisfying about getting the balance betewen reality and bizarre horror just right.
The idea I have so far is something based around an object being found (some kind of box perhaps?) by a man which takes over his life insidiously and leads him to insanity. I would like to write something that explores the themes of violence, social constructs, mental health and masculinity. I would obviously also like to include fantasy and the supernatural too for reasons of symbolism etc.
As for the setting, I imagine the main character as a fisherman and discovering this out at sea. There’s something about pulling a dark, ominous object up from out of the depths of the ocean that sends shivers down my spine.
I’ve yet to map out a timeline or think of the supporting characters but I like the start that I’ve made.
